Bat Boxes

Step 2: We Build and Install Your Bat Box—Free!

Once your property is approved, Carmel Bats volunteers build a purpose-built wooden bat box for long-term outdoor use. Our goal is to provide a sheltered, well-ventilated roost that closely resembles the natural crevices bats prefer.

Depending on the installation location, the bat box may be mounted securely to an appropriate building wall or suitable tree. Our volunteers handle the construction, mounting, and installation, with particular attention to stability, weather exposure, and clear access for bats entering and leaving their new home.

Carmel Bats provides the bat box and volunteer installation at no charge to qualifying homeowners. By eliminating the expense and complexity of installing a bat box, Carmel Bats makes it easier for residents to participate directly in local wildlife conservation.

Step 3: Let Nature Take Its Course

Once installed, your bat box is ready for its future residents. You don't need to purchase bats, provide food, or try to introduce a colony. Wild bats find suitable roosting sites naturally, often while exploring at night.

Patience is important. Some bat boxes attract occupants within months, while others may take several years or remain unoccupied. There is no guaranteed timetable. Even a properly designed and installed bat box depends on local bat populations, suitable environmental conditions, and individual species' preferences.

Bat boxes generally require little routine maintenance, although periodic exterior inspections can help ensure they remain securely mounted and in good condition. Occupied boxes should not be opened or disturbed, particularly during the maternity season when young bats may be present.

Step 4: Enjoy Your New Nocturnal Neighbors

If bats eventually move in, you may be rewarded with one of nature's most fascinating evening performances. At dusk, bats emerge from their roosts and take flight, navigating the darkness with extraordinary precision as they hunt moths, beetles, flies, mosquitoes, and other flying insects.

These insect-eating mammals play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting natural insect control. Encouraging native bat populations provides meaningful wildlife conservation benefits and promotes a healthier ecological balance.

Every successful bat box installation brings Carmel Bats one step closer to building a peninsula-wide network of safe roosting habitats. With local homeowners' participation and our volunteers' dedication, we can help restore lost habitat, protect native bat populations, and put mosquitoes on the menu.

How A Free Bat Box Installation Works

Carmel Bats makes it easy for Monterey Peninsula homeowners to give nature's nighttime insect hunters a new home, at no cost. Our volunteer organization handles the process, from evaluating your property and identifying a suitable location to constructing and installing a specially designed bat box. You don't need construction skills, specialized equipment, or bat knowledge. We just ask that you have a suitable location and are willing to welcome some remarkable nocturnal neighbors.

Why Bat Boxes Matter

As urban development, tree removal, and habitat loss reduce natural roosting opportunities, Carmel Bats helps restore suitable shelter for these remarkable nocturnal mammals. Many native bat species depend on sheltered spaces beneath loose tree bark, inside hollow trees, and within narrow cracks and crevices. As mature trees disappear and older structures are renovated or demolished, some bats lose the protected places they need to rest during daylight hours, escape predators, and raise their young.

Our specially designed wooden bat boxes recreate these natural roosting conditions. Narrow internal chambers, roughened gripping surfaces, carefully sized entrance openings, and weather-resistant construction provide bats with secure places to shelter. Larger, multi-chamber designs allow bats to move between spaces with different temperatures, helping them find comfortable conditions as the weather changes. Some species may use these structures as maternity roosts, where females gather to give birth and nurture their pups.

Following established bat conservation guidelines and incorporating features found in modern multi-chamber bat houses, Carmel Bats aims to create durable, welcoming habitats that can support bat colonies for years to come. Each successful installation contributes to our larger goal of establishing a network of suitable bat roosting opportunities throughout the Monterey Peninsula.

Step 1: We Evaluate Your Property

Our volunteers begin by assessing your property to determine whether it offers a suitable location for a bat box. Bats are selective about where they roost, and proper placement can make the difference between an occupied bat box and an empty one.

We consider sunlight exposure, mounting height, temperature, prevailing weather conditions, predator protection, and unobstructed flight paths. Bat boxes generally perform best when mounted on buildings, freestanding poles, or suitable trees, typically at least 14–20 feet above the ground. Sunlight requirements vary by climate, so careful placement is especially important along the Monterey Peninsula's cool, foggy coastline.

Not every property is suitable, but our volunteers will explain the requirements and help you determine whether your location offers a promising home for bats.
